‘เห็นน้อง ๆ แค่นั่งเล่นกัน ไม่เห็นจะได้อะไรเลย’
‘เรียนด้วยการเล่น แล้วจะเอาไปเรียนต่อในโรงเรียนได้จริงเหรอ’
หากคุณเป็นคนหนึ่งที่สนใจใน Play-based Learning แต่ยังมีความกังวลเหล่านี้ ในโพสต์นี้เราจะมาอธิบายและคลายข้อสงสัยต่าง ๆ แล้วคุณจะรู้ว่า Play-based Learning ไม่ใช่แค่เรื่อง ‘เล่น ๆ’ ค่ะ!
คุณอาจคุ้นเคยกับการเรียนรู้ที่มักเกิดจากการนั่งเรียนประจำที่กับโต๊ะนักเรียนแล้วมีคุณครูยืนสอนอยู่หน้าห้อง แต่คุณรู้หรือไม่ว่าการ ‘เล่น’ ที่ดูเหมือนจะเป็นขั้วตรงข้ามกับการเรียนนั้น กลับเป็นวิธีการเรียนรู้ที่มีประสิทธิภาพ ได้ผลดี และได้รับคำแนะนำจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญว่าเหมาะสำหรับเด็ก ๆ เป็นอย่างยิ่ง KLS จึงขอชวนคุณมาทำความรู้จักกับกระบวนการ ‘เล่นเพื่อเรียนรู้’ กันค่ะ
Play-based Learning คือการใช้การเล่นเพื่อเรียนรู้และเป็นบริบทของการเรียน เป็นกระบวนการเรียนรู้ที่ได้รับการยอมรับว่าเหมาะสมสำหรับเด็กและได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างยิ่งในโรงเรียนทั่วโลก โดยเฉพาะในสหราชอาณาจักร และได้ใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลาย ห้องเรียนในแบบ Play-based Learning จึงไม่มีโต๊ะและเก้าอี้ แต่เต็มไปด้วยมุมต่าง ๆ ให้เด็ก ๆ ได้เลือกเล่น ‘ด้วยตัวเอง’ เพื่อสำรวจ ทดลอง ค้นหา สนุกสนาน ผ่านจินตนาการของตัวเอง โดยมีคุณครูคอยทำหน้าที่ตั้งคำถามที่กระตุ้นให้คิด สงสัยเพื่อให้เด็ก ๆ ได้หาคำตอบด้วยตัวเอง ด้วยวิธีการนี้ เด็ก ๆ จึงเป็นศูนย์กลางในการเรียนรู้อย่างแท้จริง แตกต่างจากวิธีการเรียนทั่วไปที่มักจะถูกนำโดยคุณครูหรือหลักสูตรที่กำหนด
ลองมาดูตัวอย่างความแตกต่างระหว่างวิธีการเรียนรู้ทั้ง 2 แบบกันเลยค่ะ
‘การเรียนรู้’
– ในห้องเรียนคณิตศาสตร์ทั่วไป อาจจมีรูปแอปเปิ้ลหลายผลให้เด็ก ๆ ได้นับหรือตั้งโจทย์ปัญหาตามแบบฝึกหัดให้เขาได้ลองบวกลบคูณหาร เพื่อสร้างทักษะทางคณิตศาสตร์ให้เด็ก ๆ
– ในห้องเรียนแบบ Play-based Learning อาจจะไม่มีวิชาเลข แต่หากเด็ก ๆ เลือกเล่นบทบาทสมมติ คุณครูจะสอดแทรกวิชาคณิตศาสตร์โดยใช้การตั้งคำถามและเล่นไปกับเด็ก ๆ เช่น ‘คุณครูอยากซื้อแอปเปิ้ลให้เพื่อน 3 ผล และให้ตัวเอง 1 ผล คุณครูควรจะซื้อแอปเปิ้ลทั้งหมดกี่ผล’ ด้วยวิธีนี้ เด็ก ๆ จะได้ทั้งทักษะคณิตศาสตร์ พร้อมทั้งพัฒนาการทั้งด้านความคิดสร้างสรรค์ การเข้าสังคม พัฒนาการด้านอารมณ์ การแสดงออกด้านความคิด ผ่านทางการเล่นและตอบโต้กับคนรอบข้าง
‘บทบาทของคุณครู’
– ในห้องเรียนทั่วไป คุณครูจะสอนบทเรียนตามหนังสือ ในขณะที่เด็ก ๆ นั่งฟังหรือทำแบบฝึกหัด
– ในห้องเรียนแบบ Play-based Learning คุณครูผู้เชี่ยวชาญจะรับบทบาทเป็นผู้สังเกตการณ์คอยกระตุ้น ตั้งคำถาม เพื่อให้พวกเขาได้คิดและแนะนำไปในการเรียนรู้ที่ถูกต้องโดยไม่ตัดสินว่าถูกหรือผิด ทำให้น้อง ๆ ภูมิใจในผลงานของตัวเอง เกิดความเข้าใจอย่างแท้จริงในสิ่งที่ทำ และที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ ได้เรียนรู้โดยไม่ต้องท่องจำ
โดยสรุปคือการใช้ Play-based Learning ทำให้การเรียนรู้เกิดขึ้นอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ จุดประกายความอยากรู้เกี่ยวกับสิ่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัว และที่สำคัญคือ สนุกและเป็นธรรมชาติ! จึงนำไปสู่การเรียนรู้เพิ่มเติมและสร้างเป็นนิสัยที่รักการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต

If you are interested in a ‘Play-based’ learning approach but still have these questions in mind, let’s resolve your concerns and you will know that play-based learning is more than just ‘PLAYING’!
Sitting in a classroom with tables and chairs, facing the teacher and a board is where knowledge starts; that is the concept of learning we are familiar with. But do you know that ‘playing’ although seems to be on the opposite side of learning it is also an effective ‘learning approach’, especially in early childhood education. The experts suggest that a play-based learning approach lays a strong foundation for children to develop on. How does ‘learn through play’ work? Let’s explore!
A play-based approach is a research focused way of teaching that utilises a context of purposeful play into real learning for children. This popular approach is widely used worldwide. Especially in the United Kingdom, a play-based approach is the core of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. By utilising the play-based learning approach, chairs and tables are replaced with various types of playing corners and equipment, children are able to choose ‘by themselves’, explore, try out and have fun through their imagination. With this approach, child-centric learning truly happens. Whereas in the traditional approach, the learning is indicated by the teacher or syllabus.
Let’s visualise the comparison of 2 learning approaches
‘Learning’
– Imagine that we are in a normal Math classroom, pictures of apples are shown so kids can learn how to count. Teachers provide addition, subtraction, multiplication and division worksheets to develop mathematical skills.
– In a play-based classroom, they might not have a Math subject time. Teachers will incorporate a math skill in the activities that children choose. If children decide to do role play, teachers will play with children and ask ‘If I want to buy 3 apples for my friends, and 1 for myself, how many apples should I buy?’ Not only do children learn a math concept, they also develop creativity, social skills and expression while role playing and interacting with people around them.
‘Teacher’s roles’
– In a traditional classroom, teachers are teaching according to scripted lesson plans while children listen or do exercises.
– In a play-based classroom, teachers also play the role of a facilitator to stimulate kid with questions and put them on the right track when they learn through play. No right or wrong, but fun and purposeful learning! In this way, kids learn from what they do, understand and utilise the concept anywhere without having to memorise content.
With a play-based learning approach, learning and curiosity grow naturally inside children’s thoughts through enjoyable activities. Since children are free to explore in the classroom, they will adopt this trait to explore the world around them. It gradually builds a happy, lifelong learning mindset.
